Ticket to Ride is a popular board game designed by Alan R. Moon. It’s a strategy and route-building game set in the early 20th century where players compete to connect cities across a map by claiming railway routes. The game can be played with 2–5 players, and it’s known for its simple rules and strategic depth. It’s easy to learn but involves strategic planning, making it appealing to a wide range of players.
Game Objective
In Ticket to Ride, players collect train cards of different colors, which they use to claim railway routes on a map connecting various cities. The goal is to complete destination tickets by connecting specific cities. The longer the route, the more points it awards. Players also gain points for completing their tickets and can lose points if they fail to complete them.
How to Play
Setup: Each player receives 45 train cars, 4 train cards, and 3 destination tickets. They choose at least two destination tickets to keep. Players mark their scores at the beginning.
Each game turn, players choose one of the following actions:
Draw Train Cards: Take two train cards from the deck or face-up cards, or take a face-down card as a “wild” locomotive.
Claim a Route: Use train cards that match a route’s color to claim it. Players place their trains on that route and earn points.
Draw Destination Tickets: Draw three new destination tickets, keeping at least one. These give extra points but add risk.
Scoring: Points are awarded for claiming routes (longer routes give higher points). Completed destination tickets add bonus points, while incomplete ones subtract points. A bonus is given to the player with the longest continuous route.
End of Game: The game ends when a player has two or fewer train cars left. Each player then takes one final turn. The player with the highest score wins!
