Gaslands is a tabletop miniatures game set in a post-apocalyptic world where players engage in vehicular combat. The game is published by Osprey Games and features fast-paced, tactical, and cinematic action with a focus on vehicle customization and deadly battles in a wasteland setting.
OVERVIEW OF GASLANDS
In Gaslands, Earth has been abandoned by the wealthy and powerful, who now live on Mars. The people left behind on Earth are trapped in a Mad Max-like world where chaos and destruction reign. The most popular form of entertainment for both the oppressed people on Earth and the privileged elite on Mars is vehicular combat, broadcast live through the wasteland in a game show format. Contestants, who are often desperate people or mercenaries, fight for their lives in heavily armed and modified vehicles, seeking glory, wealth, or a coveted spot on Mars.
WHAT GASLANDS IS PLAYED WITH
Gaslands is typically played using toy cars, most commonly die-cast vehicles like Hot Wheels or Matchbox cars. Players modify these cars with custom weaponry, armor, and other accessories to match the game’s brutal aesthetic. Hobbyists often enjoy building and painting their cars, adding spikes, guns, and weathering effects to give them a worn, apocalyptic look.

HOW GASLANDS IS PLAYED
Gaslands is a turn-based game where players control vehicles in a series of races, battles, or other objective-driven scenarios. It blends strategy, luck, and tactical movement as players attempt to outmaneuver and destroy their opponents.
- Building a Team
Each player starts by building a team of vehicles. Teams can consist of one or more vehicles, each with different roles and abilities, depending on the scenario being played. Players choose from different classes of vehicles, such as Bikes, Cars, Trucks, Monster Trucks, Helicopters. Vehicles are equipped with weapons, gadgets, and crew members. Players can customize each vehicle by spending points from a budget, allowing for a huge variety of strategies and playstyles. - Movement and Turning
Movement in Gaslands is dictated by templates that players place in front of their vehicles to determine how they will move. Each vehicle has a gear (speed) that dictates which movement templates are available to use. Vehicles in higher gears can move faster but have a harder time turning or controlling their movement.
Players take turns moving their vehicles across the battlefield, which could be anything from an open wasteland, a crumbling cityscape, or a dangerous race track filled with obstacles. - Combat
Combat in Gaslands is fast and brutal. Each vehicle can be equipped with different types of weapons, ranging from machine guns to missile launchers. Combat is handled in a straightforward manner, where players roll dice to determine whether their attacks hit and how much damage they deal. Vehicles taking to much damage can explode, loose control, flipping and getting wrecked. - Special Abilities and Crew
Each vehicle can also be equipped with special abilities and a crew that can influence the game. As example Gunners can improve the vehicle’s shooting and Drivers can help control the vehicle during tricky maneuvers. Sponsors: Players can also choose sponsors – powerful factions or patrons who grant unique perks and abilities to the team. These sponsors might reward aggressive tactics, defensive play, or clever maneuvering. - Winning the Game
There are multiple ways to play and win Gaslands, depending on the scenario chosen.
Some common game modes include:
Death Race:
Players race across the battlefield, trying to cross the finish line while surviving enemy attacks.
Arena of Death:
Players focus on destroying each other’s vehicles in a last-man-standing battle.
Capture the Flag:
Teams compete to seize an objective while fending off attacks.
