OVERVIEW OF THE DEAD REIGN RPG
Dead Reign was published by Palladium Books, known for its emphasis on survival horror, tense social dynamics, and the relentless fight against the undead. Unlike many zombie-themed RPGs, “Dead Reign” isn’t just about slaying zombies; it’s a game that focuses equally on the challenges of survival, social interaction, moral dilemmas, and the psychological toll of living in a decaying world.
Players take on the role of survivors trying to navigate a dangerous world, each with a unique backstory, set of skills, and motivations. The game is heavily driven by storytelling, where the Game Master (GM) creates a narrative filled with challenges, mysteries, and choices that shape the outcome of the game.
GAME MECHANICS
Dead Reign uses the Palladium Megaversal System, a ruleset characterized by its use of percentages for skill checks, D20 rolls for combat and attribute checks, and a focus on skills and abilities that allow for a wide variety of character customization.
Dice: The game primarily uses D6 (six-sided), D20 (twenty-sided), and percentage dice (D100) to determine the outcomes of actions.
Skill Checks: Players roll D100 for skill-based actions, trying to roll below their character’s skill percentage to succeed.
Combat: Combat is handled with D20 rolls, where a player’s attack roll is compared against the defender’s roll (if applicable) or a static target number to determine success.
Attributes: Characters have a set of core attributes (Strength, Dexterity, Perception, etc.) that affect skills, combat effectiveness, and other aspects of gameplay. Rolls involving attributes usually rely on a D20.
The Dead Reign RPG is a game of choices, where players actions shape the story’s direction. Unlike more combat-focused RPGs, it encourages creative problem-solving, stealth, diplomacy, and social dynamics.
The game allows for in-depth customization with traits, including personality, fears, flaws, and personal motivations. This depth adds a layer of complexity to interactions and decision-making during the game.
Main focus is realism in a harsh world, with resource management playing a key role. Food, water, weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies are scarce, and players must be mindful of how they use and ration them. Encounters often revolve around the need to scavenge for resources, secure safe locations, and maintain a stronghold.
Combat in the Dead Reign RPG is flexible, brutal, and dangerous. Characters can be overwhelmed by infected/zombies if they aren’t careful, and a simple mistake can lead to infection or death. The emphasis is on using tactics and environment, rather than brute force, to survive.
THE GAMEMASTER – THE DIRECTOR
The GM plays a pivotal role as the storyteller and arbiter of the game. They craft the world, control the NPCs (non-player characters), and create challenges for the players. The GM decides the difficulty of challenges, narrates the unfolding events, and guides the story while leaving enough room for players to influence the outcome through their decisions.
The GM can introduce twists, challenges, unexpected events, and tailor the difficulty to keep players engaged. The role requires a balance of improvisation, storytelling, and the ability to challenge the group without overwhelming them.
